The statue was created in 1807 by the Tyrolean Franz Anton Zauner (1746 - 1822). It depict the eldest son of Empress Maria Theresa, Emperor Joseph II (1741-1790).
The model for the monument was that of the Roman Emperor Marc Aurelius (121-180 AD), which stands on the Capitol in Rome.
When the monument was finished, the Viennese are said to have nagged, 'Now so much money was spent and the Emperor must sit on a naked blanket and he has no stirrups'.
