Joyce Blount is the fiancé of Marcus Featherstone, a friend of Campion. Joyce wants Campion to investigate the disappearance of her Uncle Andrew. Andrew had disappeared on his way back from church. On his way to Cambridge Campion finds that Andrew’s body has been found in a stream.

The Faraday clan are an odd bunch, always fighting and short of money, depending on Caroline Faraday, the matriarch of the clan. William Faraday was the last to see Andrerw alive. Andrew had sent the car home at the church and told William that they were walking home. William lost sight of Andrew on the way back. Andrew had been bound and shot in the head by a stream. William’s gun has gun missing.

The day after the discovery of Andrew’s body, Julia Faraday is found dead, poisoned by hemlock in her tea. Campion finds a stash of weight loss pills in Julia’s bed head. Obviously one of her pills had been laced with hemlock. A little later William is cut, ostensibly by a cat, but actually from rummaging for drink in Andrew’s room.

Kitty Faraday has a scare when a letter B is found chalked on the library window. Campion thinks it is a tramp’s sign. Later cousin George appears at the house and tries to blackmail the family, saying he knows who killed Andrew, having witnessed the murder. Worse the wear for drink, George is locked in Andrew’s room. The next day he is found dead of cyanide poisoning.

Lugg investigates at the local hostelry and finds that William could not be the murderer, as he had been in the pub after he parted with Andrew. Campion. Meanwhile, apprehends a tramp called Beveridge. Beveridge is wearing Andrew’s bowler hat and has been looking for George. Beveridge spills the beans that he and George saw Andrew tie himself up and shoot himself. The gun was attached to a weight and slipped out of sight.

Andrew was the murderer of Julia and George. He had poisoned Julia’s pills and laced one of his pipes with cyanide. He had also tried to frame William for his death, all for revenge on the family after his suicide.
