Tinker has decided to run a pub in Devon and Beth has got a job at the Fitzwilliam in Cambridge. This sets Lovejoy thinking and he proposes to Charlotte. Thinks get a little complicated when Lady Jane comes back for a visit.
Meanwhile, the bank manager, Mr Brolley, calls Lovejoy in to discuss unpaid rent and his overdraft. The bank now owns Felsham Hall and Mr Brolley is not too keen on Lovejoy trying to put off potential buyers, in particular a Mr Addey.
One night Sam is attacked by nighthawks at an archaeological dig. He recovers from the knock on the head, but Lovejoy decides to pursue the nighthawks. They left behind a metal detector which Lovejoy takes to Sid Bishop, a metal detectorist. Sid finds the seller of the detector, a Mr Brolley. Lovejoy goes to Mr Brolley’s rugby club with a gold coin and tells him about a hoard of coins a young lad has found. Brolley and his mates raid the site that night and are intercepted by Lovejoy and some of Sid’s friends. Lovejoy gets his rent and overdraft cancelled by Mr Brolley.
On the day of Lovejoy’s wedding his wedding car is hijacked. The car takes him to Mr Addey’s helicopter. Mr Addey is the Mr Big of fencing archaeological finds and wants revenge on Lovejoy for putting Brolley out of business. Addey flies Lovejoy to Jersey instead of his wedding.
