Tsutakawa created more than 80 fountains in the U.S. and in Japan during the course of his 50 year career as an artist. He lived segments of his life in both Seattle and Japan. Thirty One years of age when the US entered World War II, he was drafted and served as a Japanese language instructor during the war. Upon leaving the army he began his artistic career in earnest.
This 23 foot tall, 8,200 pound sculpture is an interpretation of a Japanese obo. Obos were stacked rock structures left by travelers to celebrate the successful crossing of high mountain passes. They were very influential in his work throughout his career.
This Tsutakawa fountain stands outside the entrance to the Spokane Performing Arts Centre and is seen by thousands of newcomers to the area every year.
