While the City Hall looks old due to its classic architecture, it was actually only built in 2010. Voters approved the new building in 2007, and the new 33,000 square foot building had it's first City Hall meeting on Tuesday, August 17, 2010. It was the first new City Hall in 150 years.
About Beaufort:
There are artifacts that show that native Indians resided in Beaufort area as early as 4000 BC. History also has records of exploration of the area by Spanish Captain Pedro de Salaza in 1514 (only a year earlier, Ponce de Leon landed in St. Augustine, the first known recording of a landing in North America). Beaforts location with natural harbors on the Atlantic Ocean explains why the area was considered a prime location for early settlement of North America. It was the English who first established a settlement in Beaufort, in 1711. The history of this hold city has been partially preserved by designating 304 acres of the town a National Historic Landmark.
Beaufort is also the county seat of Beaufort County.
