Formally opened on 4th August 1937 by The Right Hon. W S Morrison, these all electric Flood gates were built to control the level of the River Medway, which was prone to flooding the low lying areas of the river.

Today they are still in use and seem to work well controlling the river level. But following the rains just before Christmas 2013, which were excessive, even these flood gates failed to prevent flooding, although it would have been a lot worse without them.

The bronze plaque is located in the middle of the structure, and can be reached via the public footbridge above the sluice gates.

The inscription on the plaque reads

"The Medway Lower Navigation Compamy
-------------------------------------
The River Medway Catchment Board
-------------------------------------
These electrically operated
automatic flood control sluices were
erected in accordance witha deed of
arrangement made between

and

by

(The Right Hon W S Morrison YC. KC. MP)"
