The Grenfell station was first planned in 1879, but construction did not begin until 1898. The Grenfell railway line was completed and opened in May 1901, with this station being the line stop on the line.
The first diesel service arrived in October 1961, but the service ended in the mid 1970s. Private steam trains visited until 1991 when the line was officially closed.
According to the NSWRail.net website:
Grenfell had the normal facilities for a terminus station, including a station building, turntable, ash pit, coal stage and water tank. The yard was rationalised in 1985, which saw the removal of the engine servicing facilities and the turntable.
The station is closed and has been restored by local organisations. The goods shed is now used as a "men's shed", a place for local men to get together. This concept is now spreading to other country towns.
