The Bridgewater Canal is considered to be the first true canal in the UK because it uses existing waterways as sources of water for the canal rather navigation routes.

This stretch of the canal connects Runcorn to Manchester and was constructed between 1767 and 1776.

The pub is next to the canal and was built in 2004 as part of a redevelopment of Sale Town Hall. The development includes a new arts centre and council offices.

Although the sign has taken its inspiration from the nearby canal, the bridge on the sign is a photograph of a bridge in Manchester rather than Sale. landing craft
