The first official post office opened in the township on 1 March 1852. From 1853 the mail contractor, John Bent, operated a service along the Murrumbidgee River between Wagga Wagga and Balranald.
In 1871 a new Post & Telegraph Office was erected at Balranald, the first brick building to be built in the township.
The current post office appears to be a typical 1960s or 1970s brick construction.
