This eagle sits atop an obelisk like memorial in the upper terrace of Greenwood Memorial Terrace Cemetery, which is on Government Way on the western edge of Spokane.

This is a life sized bronze eagle perched atop a stone pillar, an eagle being the the mascot of the "Fighting Eagles" Battalion.
The monument is dedicated to the "Fighting Eagles", the 1st Battalion 8th Infantry Regiment. They are the product of Eastern Washington University's ROTC program.
In 1990, our program won the prestigious MacArthur Award, ranking us as one of the top ROTC programs in the nation. In 1995 and 1996, at Advanced Camp, our Cadets achieved the highest scores of all the ROTC programs in the country.
The monument consists of a tapering square 10 to 12 foot stone pillar, stepped at the top, with a bronze eagle with wings spread atop. On each side of the pillar, near the top, is a round stone "Department of the Air Force" plaque, dated 1947. The whole is set upon a large concrete pad.
The plaque on the monument contains the Fighting Eagles' battle prayer, which is a derivation of the Special Services prayer:
Almighty God Who art the Author of Liberty and the Champion of the oppressed hear our prayer. We the soldiers of the 1st Battalion 8th Infantry Regiment "Fighting Eagles", acknowledge our reliance upon You as we labor to defend our nation with honor and dignity.
Protect and strengthen this "Band of Brothers" as we endeavor to do Your will. Grant us the wisdom by Your mind, courage by Your heart, and strength by Your hand. It is for you that we battle, and unto You the victory.
Our nation's freedom and heritage is built on our faith in You. We are the "Fighting Eagles". In God we trust.
