1924: Astronomer Edwin Hubble announces that Andromeda, previously believed to be a nebula, is actually another galaxy, and that the Milky Way is only one of many such galaxies in the universe
1934: John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and their gang rob the First National Bank in Mason City, Iowa.
1944: The 16th Academy Awards ceremony is held, the first Oscar ceremony held at a large public venue, Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood. Casablanca (directed by Michael Curtiz), wins the Best Picture award.
1954: RCA manufactures the first color TV set (12-inch screen; price: $1,000)
