This sculpture of King Louis iX (St. Louis) is located in the Mission San Luis Rey Museum.
Unfortunately there is no sign at the site indicating the artist, or date..or verifying that this is indeed King Louis. But the poster of this Waymark noticed that the crown and cape on the sculpture match the crown and design of the King's coat of arms as seen on Wikipedia. (
visit link) That website also indicates that these attributes are how Louis is usually depicted.
It is also difficult to determine what the sculpture is made of...perhaps painted wood?
The work depicts a lifesized young man with crown, cape, sword in front of him as he carefully holds an object (perhaps the crown of thorns) with a white cloth. There are fleur-de-lyson the crown and blue cape.
Wikipedia adds:
"Louis IX (25 April 1214 – 25 August 1270), commonly Saint Louis, was King of France from 1226 until his death. He was also styled Louis II, Count of Artois from 1226 to 1237. Born at Poissy, near Paris, he was an eighth-generation descendant of Hugh Capet, and thus a member of the House of Capet, and the son of Louis VIII and Blanche of Castile. He worked with the Parliament of Paris in order to improve the professionalism of his legal administration.
He is the only canonised king of France; consequently, there are many places named after him, most notably St. Louis, Missouri; Île Saint-Louis in Paris; Saint-Louis, Haut-Rhin and Mission San Luis Rey de Francia in the United States; São Luís do Maranhão, Brazil; and both the state and city of San Luis Potosí in Mexico."
