Église anglicane Saint John the Baptist
«Érigée bien en vue en haut d’une colline, l’église anglicane St. John the Baptist est en bois, de style néogothique et se situe à l’angle des rues Church et Costigan dans la ville d’Edmundston.
Le Lieu historique provincial de l’église anglicane St. John the Baptist, construit entre 1878 et 1887 d’après un plan soumis par l’évêque anglican John Medley lui-même. L'édifice est important car il constitue l’exemple le plus nordique de son projet de construction d’églises néogothiques caractéristiques dans l’ensemble du Nouveau Brunswick. Durant les 47 années de son épiscopat, Medley aura été témoin de la construction de plus d’une centaine d’églises néogothiques dans la province.
L’architecture particulière de l’église évoque les églises scandinaves à douves de la même époque avec ses murs bas, ses pignons abrupts, ses profondes bordures et ses avant-toits. Ce sont des traits vernaculaires associés à l’esthétique de la vision architecturale de l’évêque Medley partout dans la province. L’engouement de la communauté anglicane pour cette esthétique religieuse est manifeste dans la grande tour extérieure de l’église et de son clocher ajoutés au côté nord-ouest de l’édifice en 1927, d’après un plan gothique en trois phases du chanoine Nicolo Franchetti.
L’église joue un rôle dans le patrimoine culturel et religieux de la ville d’Edmundston depuis plus d’un siècle. Elle témoigne d’une communauté anglicane active dans le Nord-ouest à majorité francophone au moment où Edmundston a connu un développement considérable grâce à l’industrie du chemin de fer et des moulins à bois à la fin du 19e siècle. Le cimetière qui entoure l’église sur trois côtés atteste les liens étroits entre ce lieu de culte et les familles de la communauté environnante.
Consacrée en 1887, l’église anglicane St. John the Baptist est la plus ancienne église de la ville. Dans la communauté, on lui reconnaît le statut de monument.

Saint John the Baptist Anglican Church
"St. John the Baptist Church is a wooden Anglican church built in the Neo-Gothic style and located prominently atop a hill at the corner of Church and Costigan streets in the City of Edmundston.
The St. John the Baptist Church Provincial Historic Site was constructed over a period of years between 1878 and 1887 and based on a design provided by Anglican Bishop John Medley. This building is significant because it serves as the most northerly example of Medley’s program to build distinctive Neo-Gothic churches throughout New Brunswick. His 47 year episcopate saw more than 100 Neo-Gothic churches built in the province.
The church’s distinctive architecture, expressed in the low walls, steep gable-ends and deep verges and eves, is reminiscent of Scandinavian stave churches of the same era. These vernacular features of the Gothic Revival are among the aesthetic components associated with Medley-influenced churches throughout the province. The Anglican community’s continuing commitment to religious aesthetics is evident in the large exterior tower and steeple, a three-stage Gothic design by Canon Nicolo Franchetti, which was added to the north west side of the church in 1927.
The church has played a role in the cultural and spiritual heritage of the city of Edmundston for well over a century. It represents the presence of an active Anglican community in the predominately Francophone northwest during Edmundston’s significant late 19th century expansion of industry through railroads and lumber mills. A burial ground borders the building on three sides and reflects the church’s close ties to families in the surrounding community.
Consecrated in 1887, St. John the Baptist Anglican Church is the oldest surviving church in the city. It is acknowledged as a community landmark.
