Koh Tao, a small island in the Gulf of Thailand, gained a reputation as a diving mecca and is being rapidly developed. The road to Tanote Bay from the ferry terminal is a rough drive over the mountains and down the other side. The main resort here is the Mantalay, and there are two dive shops, the Green Turtle and the Calypso.

The beach is great for relaxation and there is some very good snorkeling here, including the area around this huge rock, typical for this side of the island.

The rock may be a challenge for most western tourists, but the local boys scramble up with ease and are fearless in their dives, sometimes very acrobatic. Here is a short video clip taken on our visit showing the boys diving from the Tanote Bay Diving Rock

The rock is about a hundred feet from shore, and approximately thirty feet high from the jumping point, as best as I can estimate. The coordinates are taken from the Calypso Dive Shop.
