The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the United States..and intended to recognize America as the land of hope for so many people struggling in foreign lands.
The statue was erected in 1886 on an island (later to be named Liberty Island) which was adjacent to another Island, Ellis Island, on which most immigrants to the New York/New Jersey area were processed.
