Near Hennepin, off IL Route 26, is the Wes and Sue Dixon Waterfowl Refuge, which has a nature trail with boardwalks along the way.

The Dixon Waterfowl Refuge is located on the east side of the Illinois River. There is a sign along IL Route 26, a few miles south of the junction with I-180/IL Route 71. Take the west fork and travel a short distance to another fork where the entrance to the refuge is. Parking is just after the entrance. There is a sign for the nature trail just off the parking lot. There is no fee to enter.

The trail is a 1/2 mile long, but it is not a loop - so plan for at least a mile walk. The trail is easy to follow, since it is mowed through taller grass. It follows the edge of a large pond used for flood control for the Illinois River. This area has been recently restored - a great story about conservation and the refuge dedicated over 10 years ago. There are two segments, each crossing over a shallow wetland marsh. The grass is tall. However, the views of the surroundings are beautiful. At the time of visit (September 2013), there were many kinds of flowers in all sorts of colors coloring the landscape. Several kinds of birds were seen, including a flock of hummingbirds that crossed the path. Along the way there are signs that discuss some of the flora and fauna that can be found.
