This ginormous peace pipe replica is a roadside tourist attraction in Pipestone MN.

Pipestone MN is the home of a red Catlinite quarry. Catlinite is a soft limestone rock that can be carved into amazing shapes. It is most commonly used to make peace pipes, which are items of deep cultural and spiritual significance to many Native American tribes.

For this reason, the Catlinite quarry here is very tightly regulated by the US Government. Only Federally-recognized Indian tribe members with a permit can quarry the precious pipestone, and they can only dig for a short while at designated intervals.
