The Mark 13-4 5-inch guns were early versions of this type of gun. Later versions were encased in a housing to protect gun crews from strafing or shrapnel from explosions. This was the 5-inch/51 caliber version designed for low-angle ship-to surface target use and was in use on ships built through the 1920s.
