About Sutter:

General John Sutter Sacremento CA

(Johann August Sutter 15 Feb 1803- 18 June 1880) was a Swiss pioneer, immigrant to California and associated with the California Gold Rush, and Sutter's Mill and Sutter's Fort. This area later became Sacremento, the state capital for California. Sutter was born as John Augustus Suter in Germany, joine dthe Swiss Army at an early age, married the daughter of a wealthy widow, who allowed Sutter to operate a merchantile. Sutter was not skilled at the task and scandal occurred which motivated him to immigrate to United States to avoid jailtime, traveled the Pacific for a time before settling in California where he developed a nack of befriending the Indians, who built him a house. Sutter expanded his holdings to create Sutters Fort at an opportune time, coinciding with the discovery of gold in the area. His business prospered for a time but eventually failed. His son, John Augusts Sutter, Jr was a more successul businessman.

The 8 foot statue of Sutter which was created in 1987, is the work of Spero Anargyros (23 Jan 1915- 20 Sept 2004)

The United Swiss Lodge of California was formed in 1892 to promote friendly relations between Switzerland and the United States. Specifically, their charter advises the goal: "To cultivate friendship among its members and to maintain and strengthen Swiss heritage, the Verein will hold festivities of patriotic and social character."
