This monument commemorates the bonds between Elvas and Olivença, sister cities. There are a few odd things to mention: first, the monument is not located in either of these cities. It can be found near a small chapel, close to the border; actually, just in front of it there is a destroyed bridge which was blown up by the Spanish during one of the many wars between the two countries. Second, the past of hostility between the two countries, specially evident in these borderlands; third, although Olivença is now Spain, it is officially Portugal; nobody questions this status quo but a few nationalists in Portugal, but it's a fact that the inclusion of Olivença in Spain was never officially recognized.
