After the completion of the Eads bridge across the Mississippi and the construction of the rail tunnel connecting to the Union Depot railyard, Samuel Cupples and Robert S. Brookings saw an opportunity to locate warehouses with ready rail access to the yards. These multi-storied warehouses were constructed using modern techniques for the time including system of hydraulic elevators was provided for vertical access and a system of tunnels and bridges between the complex of buildings. The complex was efficient contributed significantly to St. Louis as a rail center. The complex eventually had 20 building constructed from 1892 to 1917, the buildings were of a Richardsonian Romanesque style with arched windows and doorways and constructed of red brick, however each differed in its detail. Currently there are 10 of the buildings remaining. The buildings are being converted or have been converted to other uses today including a Westin Hotel,many loft apartments and class A office space. The complex is located across the street from the new Busch Stadium which reflects some of the architectural details of the warehouse complex including the red brick and arched details.
