"Or on a Fivefold Mount Vert a Castle embattled Sable towered on dexter and to its sinister a Lion rampant Gules." (Flags of the World)

The flag motif first appeared on a stained glass window in 1872. The colors of the lion and the background were inverted originally. In 1950 the colors were exchanged according to the heraldic rules.

The castle is a symbol for the ancient Roman legion camp Vindonissa. The lion stand for the house of Habsburg who owned the area from the 11th to the 15th century. The green hills emblematize the elevated location of the municipality between the rivers Reuss in the South and Aare in the North.

I found this flag over the entrance to a restaurant at the crossroads next to the famous monastery.
