The something strange was a lighthouse. Why on earth would a lighthouse be here? Chewelah is a LONG way from the ocean, and about 15 miles, as the crow flies, from the Columbia River, the nearest chunk of navigable water of any size. After driving past it to pull off the road, we saw the sign that explained it - the lighthouse is in the yard of "Beacon Mini Storage". I suppose that if one is going to name his storage "Beacon", then he definitely needs a lighthouse. So they either made one or dragged it in from somewhere.
It stands about 25 or so feet tall and has a real beacon in the top - a blue rotating emergency light. The lighthouse is on the west side of Highway 395 and 1.4 miles south of the south end of Chewelah, or .8 miles north of the Chewelah Casino, if you happen to be going north. Not having seen a coat of paint in a few years, it's beginning to show its age, whatever that may be.
