At the northeast corner of the square is a monument to another European soldier of the American Revolution--General Thaddeus Kosciusko, by Anton Popiel. The front commemorates Kosciusko at the battle of Saratoga On the rear of the pedestal are inscribed the words from Thomas Campbell's "Epic of Pleasure": "And Freedom shrieked as Kosciusko fell." -Washington, City and Capital, 1937, pg. 652.
The above quotation is in a section where the Guide is describing the various statues found at Lafayette Square. The statue is one of four honoring European generals who aided the colonists during the Revolutionary War. The statue is as described in the Guide and is in excellent condition.
