In the southwest corner of the square is a statue of Lafayette, by Alexander Falguiere and Antoine Mercie. Back of the figure is the inscription: "To General Lafayette and His Compatriots, 1777-1783." On the east side of the pedestal Comte d'Estaing (N), and Comte de Grasse (S) are represented as offering French naval support to Lafayette's efforts; on the west side are two French military leaders, Comte de Rochambeau (S) and Chevalier Duportail (N), tendering military support.-Washington, City and Capital, 1937, pg. 651.
