Horace Mann was born May 4, 1796 and died August 2, 1859. He served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives and Senate, and later as a U.S. Representative. He also established and served on the Massachusetts Board of Education. He was responsible for the establishment of public schools and is known in educational circles as the "Father of the Common School Movement."

Northeast Academy was built in 1936 as a New Deal project, as Northeast High School. This is a three-story Carthage stone block building, which is still operated as a school today - Northeast Academy for Health Sciences and Engineering Enterprise. A quotation by Horace Mann is engraved in a stone panel on the west side of the school, at the northwest corner. It reads:
