The homemade handcarved local limestone headstone for J. E. Millican stands tall over his concrete grave embellished with shells and stones.
The stone is hard to read, due to the deterioration of the limestone over the years. It reads simply:
"J. E. MILLICAN
Born Aug 4 1835
Died Nov 26, 1934"

"John Elixander "John E." Millican
Birth: Aug. 4, 1855
Bosque County
Texas, USA
Death: Nov. 26, 1934
Texas, USA
The Millican Mountain in Coke County Texas is named after John.
Wive's, Nancy Edwards, Nancy Arrington, Mary Barefoot and Ellen Schuffield. John had no children with his 3rd and 4th wife's.
Once while walking with his wife Nancy Ellen, a man acted inappropriately in front of Ellen, (urinating in public) and John shot him. John wore 2 pistols in shoulder holsters.
When Ellen passed away Isaac stayed for a while with John's brother David. When John met Nancy Jane Arrington he asked Mr. Arrington for permission to see Nancy and Mr. Arrington who was aware of John's reputation was understandably nervous about meeting him, and John was nervous meeting Mr. Arrington and asking for his daughters hand, folded his arms, Mr. Arrington thought he was going for his pistols and quickly drew his own pistol and pushed it in John's stomach. But Mr. Arringtons fears were unfounded. John and Nancy raised a large family.
John and his wife Nancy Arrington along with John's grandmother Sarah, moved the entire family along with all their stock from Goldthwaite, Texas to Coke County Texas in 1893. Sarah had a good stand of horses and a hack and some of John's wagons were pulled by Oxen and others by Mules. Malinda was 19, Roxie was 17, Ike was 15, Dave was 9, Hayden was 6, Mattie was 4, Dink was 3, and it is not sure whether Catherine had been born yet or if Nancy was pregnant with her. At any rate they all left Goldthwaite and traveled all the way to Coke County Texas (in which had been until just a few years before Tom Greene County, Texas) without having to open one gate or cut one wire.
John died in Coke County at the age of 81 in 1934.
