Located on the south side of the Coleman Building along Main Street in downtown Alturas is a colorful mural depicting geese in flight over the the Modoc County landscape with the Warner Mountains in the background.
The artist of this mural is Walter Van Der Heyden and he has painted many murals throughout Alturas. This particular mural has a commemorative symbol that reads 'Pacific Power - 100 Years - 1910-2010' in the bottom left corner. I'm assuming Pacific Power paid for the creation of this mural and I don't know if this utility company resides in the Coleman Building where this mural is located.
Van Der Heyden has a personal Facebook profile and I was able to locate a PDF document that contains a few pictures of carved wooden pieces that he creates in addition to painting.
This mural is a typical scene that one may find if they happen to travel south of Alturas and within the Modoc National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is home to many migratory bird species and the Warner Mountains provide a good backdrop in this grassland area. Van Der Heyden's murals all look very similar in style and use of colors with each scene containing good use of contrasting hues and flat-like two-dimensional use of shapes. There's definitely a sense of professionalism in his work and it expands to his woodworking skills as well.
