This is the so-called 'Marktkirche' (Market Church), which was the first Lutheran church in Essen, Germany, Nordrhein-Westfalen. It's located at the 'Markt'.
The exact date when the church was built is unknown. But it is first mentioned in 1054. It is called 'Marktkirche' since the 14th century. In 1478 the church has been enlarged.
On 2nd May 1563 the church has been reformed to be Lutheran.
In 2005/06 the church has been re-built in big parts by plans of the architect Eckhard Gerber.
The church is listed in the German Monument registers since 1985.
