The Edmond Visual Arts Commission is responsible for dozens of outdoor sculptures in Edmond. They appear on every corner in the downtown area, on street medians and in front of commercial buildings throughout Edmond. They are a delight!
This sculpture was placed in June 2013, located in front of Othello's Restaurant at One South Broadway. The piece has a copyright date of 2004. It depicts a little mouse standing upright with its hands in front, and its head looking up. The mouse has a crackled surface. This bronze mouse is standing on a large piece of Swiss cheese made of rusted steel, with a diamond plate finish on the top and side facing the street.
The artist, David Phelps is a renowned sculptor of outdoor art, particularly large-scale sculpture. Regarding his mice sculptures, a quote from Phelps' website says: “I studied live mice for months before beginning the sculpting process. Sculpting was a challenge because unlike my former models, this group didn’t listen when asked to hold a pose. I liked these mice so much that I continue to incorporate them into new sculptures, combining them with fabricated steel and other materials. I started with slices of swiss cheese fabricated from steel..."
A plaque at the base of the sculpture reads:
