After Thomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia, the Secretary of Treasury Albert Gallatin wanted to do the same in the growing New York City. After much debate with the city, Gallatin got his approval and thus on April 18, 1831 founded the university. He won support of merchants, bankers, and traders. Mainly the wealthy were more than happy to spend some of their own personal money to help fund the project. He was then elected the first president of NYU. New York University, or NYU, was founded in 1831 and is now one of the largest private colleges in the country. It is mainly around Washington Square Park area, but there are some off campus site. The neighborhoods around the park are used for dorms for the campus and many students come to the park to relax and do homework.
