The platform was a joint project between the Lions Club of Gerringong & the Kiama Municipal Council. The platform has seating, protective fencing & placards outlining the types of whales, their communication & migration. It is also a good spot to view the yachts heading south in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.

Serving a record-breaking 12 years as mayor, Cr Sandra McCarthy was highly regarded in local government circles and will be remembered for guiding Kiama council through a stable period of local government in what was a tumultuous political time in the Illawarra. Cr. McCarthy did not stand for re-election in the 2012 Local Government elections.
