The Smithsonian Inventory (
visit link) describes the work and informs us:
"Three male figures symbolizing Learning, Religion, and Industry, in a salute to Boston's energy, scholarship, and spiritual life. Industry is represented by a figure operating a jackhammer. Learning is represented by a seated figure measuring with a compass held in his proper right hand while reading from an open book held in his proper left hand. He is seated on a globe. Religion is represented by a kneeling figure with his arms extended and his face turned to the sky. Each figure is installed on a separate base."
and the inscription:
"(On base of Religion:) PARKMAN PLAZA / DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF / GEORGE F. PARKMAN 1823-1908 /LAFAYETTE MALL WAS IMPROVED AND THIS PLAZA CREATED 1958-1960 BY HON. JOHN F. COLLINS AND HON.
