This classical statue of David is a copy of Michelangelo's masterpiece which stands in the academy of fine arts in Florence, Italy. This particular copy by the founder Angelus & Sons was purchased at the Paris Exposition in 1900 and gifted to the City of Buffalo Historical Society by Andrew Langdon. A bronze replica of David by Florentine founder Clemente Papi is located in the Piazzetta Michelangelo in Florence, while a replica by the Fondaria Artistica of Rome is located in Sioux Falls, SD.
Biblical hero David stands nude with his proper left arm bent at the elbow towards his chin and his proper right arm to his side, bent slightly at the wrist. He holds two ends of a sling, one in his proper right hand and the other in his proper left hand. The inscription on the front of the base reads: "David, Michael Angelo, 1474-1564" The inscription on the rear of the base reads: "Presented to the Buffalo Historical Society and the city of Buffalo by Andrew Langdon, MCMIII."
