Ditto Creek was the place where the road left hard volcanic rocks and was softer and easier on animals and wagon wheels.

From the Idaho Scenic Byways web page:

The terrain changed from the volcanic rocks near Canyon Creek to a softer dirt and gravel road near Ditto Creek. Large granite boulders caught the attention of many diarists, many of whom wrote their names on these with axle grease. A Bannock Indian trail went up the valley on the way to the Camas Prairie. This area is private property.
