Heinrich Handschin was born 1830 in the neighboring town Rickenbach. In the 1850s he moved to France where he studied velvet weaving. He later emigrated to Russia and became a highly successful entrepreneur and cloth manufacturer, The company he founded was the largest ribbon producer in the empire until WWI. Handschin moved back to Switzerland in 1892. When he died two years later he passed all his property to the canton of Basel-Landschaft.

He was buried in the churchyard of Gelterkinden. His grave monument is located between trees south of the church. It is a marble monument with a column on top. The front face has a metal plate with a relief portrait of Heinrich Hanschin, a small plaque just states his name and the dates of birth and death.
