The cemetery of Gelterkinden is located in the churchyard of the church St. Peter on a hill at the eastern border of town. Because of it special location the church has never been completely surrounded by buildings, so the churchyard cemetery could be expanded when it became too small and was not transferred to a more peripheral location as in many other towns. Today it contains about 800 graves.
The grave closest to the church is a grave monument of Heinrich Handschin. He was born in the area and emigrated to Russia in the 1850 to become one of the largest cloth manufacturers of the Russian Empire. When he died in 1894, he passed all his property to the canton Basel-Landschaft. The plaque on the grave monument just states the name, the place where he was born and the dates: "Heinrich Handschin von Rickenbach / geb. 1. Febr. 1830 gest. 16. Juni 1894".
