The pub actually stands next to the Bridgewater Canal opened between 1767 and 1776.
However the pub has chosen to take inspiration from the Manchester South Junction and Altrincham Railway which runs parallel with the canal and has Sale Station very close to here.
The railway opened in 1849 connecting Altrincham to Manchester and Sale station was approximately half way along the route. Although these days the railway has been converted to an electric light rail transit system it was originally a steam railway.
The station still has platform canopies similar to the ones on the sign, but the signalling gantry is much bigger than would have been needed on this railway.
