Part of FDR's "alphabet soup" of New Deal public relief agencies, the Federal Emergency Administration of Public Works built a new courthouse for the citizens of Sterling County in 1938.
The courthouse is built of native limestone in the Art Deco style. It features bas-relief panels of sheep and cattle that were so important in the ranching economy here, interspersed with panels celebrating the ubiquitous West Texas plant, the prickly pear cactus.
