Northport has a mayor and city council form of government and elections are held every four years. As of 2012 the population was 292 a slight decrease from 2009.

Northport is one of the first towns after crossing the Canada and US border at Waneta. Northport is approximately 10 miles southeast along the Northport-Waneta Road and is in Stevens County.

Northport is a very friendly town and offers excellent fishing on the Columbia River that borders the town.

As you enter the town from the north, you will notice a smoke stack. It is a replica of the last smokestack from the Northport Smelter which was in operation from 1898 to 1921.

The smelter once located to the north of this point processed gold, copper and lead ores from the LeRoi Mine in Rossland, B.C. and the leadpoint area located east of town.

The building of the railroad and completion of the smelter began an economic boom that drove Northport's population to 3000 in 1918. When the smelter closed the population dropped to about 300. The last remnants of this once mighty industrial plant, were covered over in 2004 during an environmental cleanup.

At this site are numerous pictures and information outlining the smelters history.

Also in town is an old fire hose house build in 1897. There is a plaque located on the hose house.

The plaque reads as follows: Northport Fire Station A volunteer fire department was formed when bucket brigades proved inadequate. In the 1898 and 1914 fires, the department used a hydrant system and hose wagon pulled by human runners relieved at relay points along the routes to fires.

Be sure and stop by the Mustang Grill and enjoy a fresh brewed cup of coffee and meet some of the locals that offer a wealth of information about the area and all the favorite fishing spots.
