Perkins has a commission-manager form of government with five elected city commissioners and one appointed city manager. Their offices are located at 110 N. Main, and they are open Monday to Friday, from 8-5.
Perkins is located on Highway 177, about ten miles south of Stillwater, the home of Oklahoma State University. It is a town of approximately 2900 citizens. The Perkins area was opened to settlement during the Land Run of 1889. The first settlers applied for a 40-acre tract to be called Cimarron. Incoming settlers renamed the townsite Italy. On January 30, 1890, with the help of Congressman Bishop W. Perkins of Kansas, a post office was established, and in July of that year, the town was renamed Perkins, after Cong. Perkins.
The Municipal Building is a one-story red brick building with a red metal roof. In front of the building is a lovely garden area named the Sheri Hall Gordon Memorial Park. This area has a gazebo, fountain and flower plantings. Perkins appears to be a town very conscious and protective of its history.
