Located south of W Carlos Street in Alturas lies a pioneer cemetery that contains a number of graves, many which have been preserved by volunteers of the community. In the center of the cemetery is a piece of lava rock with a plaque monumented in front and near a flag pole that reads:
PIONEER CEMETERY THE FIRST CEMETERY TO BE USED BY THE RESIDENTS OF ALTURAS FROM 1872 TO 1890. APPROXIMATELY SIXTY BODIES OF PIONEER RESIDENTS ARE INTERRED HERE. RESTORATION BY COOPERATIVE EFFORTS OF THE N\ATIVE DAUGHTERS OF THE GOLDEN WEST THE ALTURAS GARDEN CLUB AND THE ALTURAS CEMETERY DISTRICT DEDICATED FEBRUARY FIRST, 1964 |
Through doing some online research I discovered that a number of graves in this cemetery were moved to the Alturas Cemetery at the request of family members of the deceased, thus, the plaque inaccurately notes the true number of graves that remain here. In addition, I also discovered a couple of gravesites located outside the perimeter fence and were in poor condition, with no headstones of identifiable markers.
