The historic, 10,000-square-foot Gustav Freiwald House is located at 1810 NE 15th Avenue, Portland, Oregon. The owners of the majestic 1906 Queen Anne house celebrated its 100th birthday Sunday, July 16, 2006 with High Tea and History. The historic house is now the Victorian "Lion and the Rose" Bed and Breakfast Inn.

Gustav Friewald was born in Germany and for many years was the owner of the Star Brewery in Vancouver, Washington (about ten miles north). In 1906, he sold his interest in the brewery and built the St. Elmo's Hotel in Vancouver. He wanted a grand mansion in the suburbs to show his wealth and the Irvington area was a new, up-and-coming neighborhood in Portland. A streetcar line on 15th Avenue connected the neighborhood to downtown Portland. Irvington was one of the first neighborhoods where residents were not permitted to stable horses.

Gustav commissioned noted Portland architect Emil Schacht to design the house, but felt that Schacht's Craftsman design was too simple. He wanted a more ostentatious house and hired architect H.H. Menges to wrap Schacht's design in Victorian detail (shades of "The Fountainhead"). Menges added the octagonal turret, a wrap-around porch, Greek columns, dormers, faux balconies and Oriel windows. As a result, the house is an architectural hybrid: the basic form is Craftsman (large rooms, large rectangular windows, and wide hallways and doorways) but the exterior is Queen Anne Victorian style which was considered retro in 1906.
