This statue was created as part of the "Spirit Bears in the City" project in 2006, where dozens of blank fibreglass bears were painted by local businesses, displayed around Greater Victoria for several months, then auctioned off for charity. This one, named "The Grizz", was sponsored by the Victoria Grizzly Hockey Club. The Grizz was painted by local artist George Anderson.
