Built by Edward Cutler in 1900, this hotel was also called the British Ensign or Royal Ensign. It was an important stage stop and inn for travellers. Popular with sportsmen, it was often filled to capacity during hunting season. School classes and religious services were held for a brief period. In recent years it has operated as a pub.

The name "17 Mile House" is based on its distance along the historic road from Victoria to Sooke, in the same way as with Four Mile House and Six Mile House closer to Victoria. Even with modern realignment of roads, 17 Mile House is still exactly 11 miles along Sooke Road from Six Mile House.
