The Pera Palas Hotel was designed by the French architect Alexander Vallaury and its construction begun in May 1881. It was open in October 1891, with the presence of the Sultan himself.
The significance of this hotel - besides being the oldest hotel in an European style in Turkey - is closely connected with the famous Orient Express, as the passengers of the train arriving in Istanbul would be accommodated in the Peras Palas. Well, after all, the company owning the Express also held 50% of the hotel's property.
