The Four Craters Lava Field covers an area of 7.4 square miles and was erupted from four cinder cones spread along a two-mile long eruptive zone located along NNW trending faults. The lava field was erupted about 13,000 years ago at the same time as eruptions from Lava Mountain, seven miles to the NNW formed the East Lava Field.

Cone 3 is the third cinder cone from the south end and rises about 220 feet above the surrounding lava field and has a basal diameter of about 1250 feet. The summit is on the northeast rim of a crater. The crater is breached to the southwest resulting in a very low rim along the western side.

To reach the area take the Crack in the Ground Road, which begins a mile east of Christmas Valley. Follow the road northward for about 9 miles and then hike northeast to the cone. Minimum hiking distance is about 1.5 miles round trip, about half on rugged aa lava and steep loose cinder slopes with no trail.
Altitude in Feet: 4858
