The city was built here in the year because it was along a trade route with the vikings to inner Europe from the nearby river. Jump ahead 800 years later to find that the city has a population of over 600,000. The city was under Soviet rule for a few years before the county won its independence. Most of the historic building are replicas due to the bombardment of german forces in WWII. The national language is Latvian, but most people speak English.
