Lovejoy is in need of a brake light and calls at a scrap yard. Whilst there he acquires an old cannon and puts it on the back of the lorry. At the pub the cannon proves too heavy for Lovejoy’s truck and falls off into the pub cellar. The landlord demands damages, but Lovejoy is short of cash. Major Turpin, an arms expert, tells Lovejoy it is part of a scrap scheme from WW2 whereby old cannons were dropped by the RAF when bombs were in short supply. He claims the cannon is only worth £700.
Lovejoy decides to go to London to get a valuation of the cannon. At the Tower of London an expert identifies the canon as a rare Cromwellian naval cannon, worth £7000. Whilst away Major Turpin buries the cannon, hoping to steal it later. Lovejoy’s expert uncovers the cannon and the Major is thwarted.
