Ishkooda 14 (Formerly Eureka 2) was a Tennessee Coal and Iron ore mine on Birmingham's Red Mountain. There are several feet of dirt/debris in front of the portal. TCI sealed the slope with a concrete plug when the mine was abandoned. 1895 denotes when mining began on the site and the 1941 date denotes upgrades or reopening after the Great Depression.
The Birmingham District is a geological area in the vicinity of Birmingham, Alabama where the raw materials for making steel, limestone, iron ore, and coal are found together in abundance. The district includes Red Mountain, Jones Valley, and the Warrior and Cahaba coal fields in Central Alabama.
The ore veins in the Red Mountain District occur at an angle to the ground surface which is a series of hills (mountains) and valleys. Shafts were driven down the slope and laterals were then dug at right angles to the main shaft.

KNOWN DANGERS:
The whole area is a former mining district now overgrown with trees and underbrush. Many of the slopes are tailings dumps and a thus dangerous because of potential loose rock. Stay on the trails.

Visit during daylight hours only! The mine portal is located in Red Mountain Park about 1 mile from the parking area. The terrain is hilly with level trails (old railroad roadbeds) and cross-country trails. It is not a place to be after dark, plus the park closes at sundown.
